Protecting Feet, Powering Futures: Umbrellas and Shoes for 1,500 Schoolchildren in Lonavala
Story
My name is Sunil Narayan Chitte, and I have founded Janhit Sewa Foundation with my loving wife Mrs. Suhani Sunil Chitte, a grassroots organization based in Pune, Maharashtra. At our core, we believe that no child should miss school because they cannot afford basic protection from the rain. Every year, during the monsoon season, hundreds of children from underprivileged communities walk long distances to school barefoot and without umbrellas. They often arrive soaked, fall sick frequently, and are forced to miss days or even weeks of school—pushing them further behind and weakening their connection to education.
This heartbreaking reality has inspired our mission: to distribute 1,500 umbrellas and 1,500 pairs of shoes to children in government schools across rural Lonavala. With this small intervention, we can help ensure that these children stay dry, stay healthy, and most importantly, stay in school.
This project is incredibly personal to me. While travelling through various parts of Maharashtra, I often saw young children selling jamun, maize, or tea on the roadside—many of them barefoot and out of school. Their resilience left a mark on me and sparked a promise: I would dedicate my life to making education more accessible for children like them.
Through this campaign, we aim to raise ₹7,14,000/- which will cover the cost of quality umbrellas (₹120 each) and durable school shoes (₹280 each), as well as logistics and coordination efforts to reach the right beneficiaries through local school principals.
The Janhit Sewa Foundation, registered under the Societies Act, has already supported over 1500 children with learning materials, uniforms, and health initiatives. We also extended vital relief during the COVID-19 crisis, distributing ration kits and essential supplies to migrant families in need.
Your contribution—no matter how small—can make a lasting difference. You can help a child walk safely to school, stay healthy during the monsoons, and continue their learning journey with confidence and dignity.
Let’s stand together to protect not just their feet, but their futures.
